However, SEO for startups shouldn’t be the highest priority, from my experience, firstly a startup should establish if their product is valuable and necessary for their target audience. What is more, SEO done poorly can end up causing more harm than good. But of course, if you have the necessary competences and knowledge about SEO, you can think about it in advance with the help of some simple activities:
Create unique, valuable and high-quality content. Google is updating its algorithms all the time and they are built by some of the best engineers in the world to determine if the content is useful and your content should be.
Pay attention to link building. As the name of your startup can change many times where possible use shortened URL that allows changing the target URLs. No worries about the SEO, as ranking goes to the target URL (great video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMkltd6dZzU ).
Guest blogging is one of the best ways to get relevant back links with the desired anchor text. It also helps to get subscribers, traffic and authority in the industry. Either you’re writing your own blog or an external blog post, remember to put links as anchors, avoiding such word combinations as learn more, check out, read here etc.
Take into account website’s html structure basics. For example, H1 tag makes certain words to stand out and allows readers to see what your website is about. It also helps to tell search engines what your page is about, and when used in conjunction with the page title, META description, keywords, and keyword targeted content, it helps to improve search engine ranking for specific keywords and phrases.

Excellent work. You have explained almost all the mistakes a novice SEO professional will make. I do agree, “motoring” should be done on regular basis specially via Google webmaster tool & Google analytics to find out the new market opportunities. Also, the effective use of adwords keyword tool & impressions from Google webmaster tool will help to end up with better results for client rather than choosing keywords with less demand among Google searchers.

I would say those 16 ways are 16 Gems.

Great Job.

Cheers,
Theeban
