If you abuse guest posting and use commercial anchors and dofollow links in the msajority of your blog posts it is a method to influence the ranking in Google that is out of the Google’s Guidelines. if you guest post and place links with nofollow and do not use excessive commercial anchor text I see no reason why you should be penalized. So if you do things without “excess” it should be safe I think.

I could be wrong, but a lot of “trusted” people guest blog. Google isn’t going to penalize them.
