The site looked penalized until I removed the disavow file.

#16, very true. this seems to help rankings.

#27, I think that time has dropped to about 2 weeks.

Hope you get rid of all your unwanted links that might harm your site. Link building is not unnatural per se; Google mentions that a link scheme is consider to be when someone is “buying or selling links, exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links; exchanging goods or services for links; using automated programs or services to create links to your site”.

There are ways to build links according to Google’s Guidelines. Some examples here: https://cognitiveseo.com/blog/12842/link-building-2017/

I’m new to this. I hired a guy from Pakistan to build some links. He produced directories, bookmarks, posted comments and wrote one blog that he placed on lots of blog sites, exactly same copy (duplicates), 400 links in all.
Even if the blogs were all unique it seems to me that paying someone to write blogs for you in this manner is unnatural. However, linkbuilding according to Google seems to be legitimate. I’m confused.
I’m inclined to disavow all of them to be on the safe side.
Are all bookmarks bad? All directories bad? Wheres the line on blogging?
