This is a TRUE, SUCCESSFUL & UNREQUESTED story from Manuel Porras, one of our customers.

“I don’t have any knowledge about a recovery using the Google Disavow on an algorithmic penalty. Only manual penalties have been publicly reported to work using the Disavow tool. Knowing this I wanted to be 100% sure that this isn’t something else. I took the diligence and analyzed the situation carefully.”

Read the full-disclosure at the end of the article.

Let me tell you my experience with CognitiveSEO and the Google Disavow Tool.

I’ll begin a few months back in time.

PENGUIN our worst enemy

Note by Razvan – You can find another traffic screenshot in the mail conversation I had with Manuel, at the bottom of this email.

One of the websites I manage SmartLipo.com had suffered considerable Google ranking + traffic impact with the release of PENGUIN back in April 2012. But the first releases of penguin did not kill us completely from Google’s Organic results. Google traffic kept dropping slowly over time. Until in May 22, 2013 the 4th update of PENGUIN was released. After this release we dropped and dropped and dropped in rankings for our main two keywords. Traffic from Google was almost none soon after that.

Note by Razvan – This is SmartLipo, the site that recovered from the Google Penguin Algorithmic Penalty using Google Disavow

Here is the full history of the site on the WayBackMachine

We had been trying everything possible

  • Removed links we could remove, and contacted webmasters to help us removing (suspicious links)
  • Recreated the whole site, with a new backend, enhanced page speed
  • Created new content (taking into account what users are and were looking for)
  • De-optimized what we considered over-optimized SEO
  • Tried to build new (clean and not black-hat) external links
  • Improved our Social sites (facebook, twitter, opened a pinterest account)
  • Corrected the errors reported in Google Webmaster Tools (as much as we could)
  • Etc, and other things

Nothing seemed to have the slightest impact in our Google rankings (hence our Google traffic)

Discovering and getting to know CognitiveSEO

One day in May my boss tells me to try the disavow tool. I was very skeptical of using it, having read that it could be harmful if used wrong. But what else did we have to loose? Google de-indexing us perhaps?  He (my boss) pointed me to use this tool he saw that featured an Unnatural link detection option. I went and played a little in Cognitiveseo. I created a new campaign for the site, the report was ready after a few minutes. I decided to import links that I exported from webmaster tools. I just felt more secure adding some extra link data.

Using the ‘Unnatural Links Detection’ option

I decided to run the link classification, it takes a few minutes. I decided to go slow, and take my time. As I mentioned I am too skeptic and cautious (that can be sometimes a problem when you need to react fast). Anyway I decided to take a look at every domain and almost every link, I was not sure to trust the unnatural link report from the beginning. I went and checked with my own eyes almost every link and every domain (no matter if suspect, unnatural or ok). I found some unnatural links that I liked and some ok links that I did not trust. But in general I ended up agreeing with the report in a considerable percentage. Apart from the few links I manually readjusted from OK to unnatural and vice-versa I did not have much work to do on the report. I took a second look (took me some time), and decided to export the domains I marked as disavowed (well actually all suspicious and unnatural ones).

Once outside Cognitive I went and took a last look at the domain entries of the disavow file, making sure no good domains were in it (at least the ones I consider vital: e.g. Facebook,  twitter accounts, trusted customer sites linking back to us, some blogspots.com domains, etc., you get the idea of which site you can trust).

Submitting the disavow file to Google

On July 9th submitted the disavow file to Google (made the sign of the cross). I captured a screenshot to show later my boss that I did use the disavow tool as he suggested a few days back. I continued with my life. I kept checking rankings every other day, nothing seemed to change the first days, the first weeks.

The resurrection

Close to 3 weeks passed after the disavow submission, when all of a sudden one day when I run the rank check (using a VPN tool) from different IPs and different states in the US, I saw that our site was raking #3 and #2 from many different locations. At first I thought I was doing the rank check wrong, maybe the VPN is not working and I am doing a local search? Maybe the browser cache is holding onto my Google session? Are these results personalized? I did not want to get any false hope so I did not tell my boss about the news, I decided to track ranks for the next days, every morning. The ranks were consistent, #3, #2 and even #1 in some cities. I finally accepted it to be true as I saw the increase in traffic in Google Analytics. I did not want to celebrate, maybe its temporary, maybe google is playing a prank on us, maybe it’s all a dream. Well that dream has been going on for the last 5 weeks.

Conclusion

Although I have done many things to my site, I am pretty f***ing sure the disavow submission was the one that helped me back in rankings. I could have done it without the help CognitiveSeo.com, yeah but it would have taken me weeks if not months to find out by myself which links are bad and which not, and webmaster tools does not give me many links that Cognitive does. Cognitive is a perfect way to complement what webmaster tools shows you (external links). And now I know that Cognitive saves a mountain of time classifying bad from ok links.

Cognitive is not paying me to write this, I just want to acknowledge and share this story with the skeptical ones like me out there. Hope it works for you as it did for me. If you do it right, I am sure it will.

Transparency Note and disclosure from Razvan Gavrilas(founder)

On September the 3rd I received the first mail from Manuel, (I did not know him until then).

I answered him that I would be interested in his story, but he never got back … until 17th of September, when he mailed me the story that you just read.

I don’t have any knowledge about a recovery using the Google Disavow on an algorithmic penalty. Only manual penalties have been publicly reported to work using the Disavow tool. Knowing this I wanted to be 100% sure that this  isn’t something else. I took the diligence and analyzed the situation carefully. Here is the full transcript of the mail discussion between me and Manuel (for the sake of full transparency).

As the founder of cognitiveSEO, I am extremly happy and proud when people connect with me and tell me their successful stories on how the tool made their life easier.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all, our customers, for making this possible. It is YOU that give us the power to innovate & solve your problems faster & better.

In the last months we have been working on an automatic unnatural links classification system. Before going into the details of this new tool, I would like to share with you the challenges that we had in implementing such a complex system. (if you are not interested in those just skip to the tool)

1. User Oriented Concept

The Unnatural Links subject generates a lot of confusion among website owners, webmasters and even SEO professionals. I can tell you that the unnatural link concept is a hard to grasp concept for the majority of the people. You can easily “feel” the confusion that most people have if you read the Google Product Forums, where a lot of people talk about their unnatural link warnings and Google Penguin penalties.

Some other techniques that classify links are based on a certain “toxicity” level or “potential” risk. We consider these techniques generate a poor user experience and are only adding complexity to an already complex formula.

The route we took is to simplify the unnatural link understanding and disavowing process.

We developed the system in such a way that it will split the links in

  • Unnatural Links.
  • Suspect Links.
  • OK Links.

As simple as that!

2. False Positive Ratio

It is important to have a really low incorrect detection ratio. To put it simple you would not want a system that detects only 10% of your unnatural backlinks or misclassifies the good links as being unnatural.

This was hard to achieve. No automatic detection system provides 100% certainty (Google misclassifies site links also … it is all about the final False Positive ratio).

We took the performance up to 97% percent well-done classifications and a false positive ratio of only 3% on our testing dataset.

3. Incorrect Metrics

An important factor for a well-done classification, are the metrics that are used in order to draw any valid conclusion out of it.

For example using external metrics such as the Google PR or the indexation status of a link in Google are flowed ways of identifying an unnatural link. That is because you simply are able to identify this link only after Google has potentially marked it as unnatural and are looking at Google as the major sign of an unnatural link. This means that using such metrics in an automatic system makes the system rely on things that have been already flagged. These might only work for sites that have already been penalized.

We do not use any external metrics in our algorithm in order to detect unnatural backlinks. This made the development process harder but in the end more accurate and trustworthy.

4. Detection Algorithm

I am not going to share the algorithm that is used in order to classify links as natural or unnatural but I can tell you that this algorithm does not use external metrics and it relies on AI, in-depth content and link profile analysis in order to segment the so called “toxic” links from the natural ones. The rule set we use is based on the official Google Quality Guidelines.

Let me give you a quick example considering a web-directory link. In the context of a natural looking link profile that web-directory link will not be flagged as unnatural as it simply is not. The same link put in a unnatural link profile will be looked from a different POV and will be flagged as unnatural due to the high amount of unnatural link patterns found in the suspect link profile; patterns that falls into the black hat SEO category.

And the new tool is called:

Unnatural Link Detection

The tool that simplifies the “unnatural links” complexity!

Some of the most important features of the tool are:

  • Automatic unnatural link classification.
  • Transparency & detail on each classified link. (why it is unnatural)
  • Google Disavow Export.
  • Fast Double-Check using the Link Snapshots.
  • Flag & Tag Links. (bulk actions available also)
  • Advanced Link profile segmentation using unnatural filters.
  • Can be used both on your site and the competitors.
  • Ignore Links that are already disavowed, or unimportant to the analysis.

The Unnatural Links Detection widget is found in the inBound Link Analysis module, on any campaign that you run in cognitiveSEO.

Mixed with the Visual Link Explorer, this new set of data points will instantly give you the unnatural link profile of a site.

Who should use this new tool?

Everyone really, and here is why.

1. Penalized Sites Owners

This is the ideal tool if you’ve received an unnatural link warning or have been penalized by the “Google Penguin Updates”/ received a manual penalty.

The tool helps you find every link to your website and then analyse the potential risk they carry. Even if you have a lots of links, you can easily check the inbound links to disavow or remove is a breeze now with. You can easily check the links using the already generated screenshots . If we were wrong on the classification you can easily re-classify the link.

After you manually checked the entire list of links and disavow links just hit the Google Disavow Export and you have the file ready for the Google Import. If you see a link that uses links schemes you have the posibility to remove the link or apply other manual actions.

For the links you want to manually remove just create To-dos that you will later review.

Links that pass the unnatural test are marked as OK because those are natural links. Keep those links and use them as an example of high quality backlinks.

2. Non-Penalized Sites Owners

For sites that haven’t been penalized by any unnatural link warning or update, the tool helps to manage the link risk by monitoring your site and competitors on a weekly basis.

You will stay ahead of the game by being able to:

  • Make informed Link Building Decisions.
  • Know your risk to be penalized and monitor it weekly.
  • Monitor your competitors’ link toxicity and risk.
  • Monitor your site for Negative-SEO campaigns.

Link Risk and toxic links or harmful links, as concepts, are only useful if you know your bad links before Google takes any action against your site. If you know it before they do, you are able to manage it.

Matt Cutt has recommends using the Disavow tool even if your site wasn’t penalized:

If you are at all worried about someone trying to do negative SEO or it looks like there’s some weird bot that’s building up a bunch of links to your site and you have no idea where it came from, that’s the perfect time to use disavow as well.

I wouldn’t worry about going ahead and disavowing links even if you don’t have a message in your webmaster console

It’s time again for another important cognitiveSEO upgrade. In the last months we worked continuously at adding better features, improving the user experience and creating new integrations that would allow our customers to get the best SEO intelligence possible at the best price on the market.

Let me structure the new release so that you can easily see what we added to the system and how it will benefit you:

  1. MajesticSEO Partnership
  2. Important Links and Rankings Upgrades
  3. Simpler Credit System
  4. New Pricing

1. MajesticSEO Partnership

Satisfying our customers in terms of Professional and Best in Class Service is top priority for us, here at cognitiveSEO. That is why we decided to add, one of the most powerful link data providers, as a new link data-source to our platform. Until now we used Ahrefs + Blekko + SEOkicks as our raw link data providers (and MajesticSEO and SEOmoz for metric data).

We now added the MajesticSEO dataset in our link data offering, and now you will get raw link data from

all in one place, aggregated, de-duplicated and re-crawled on demand, with no requirement of an account on any of the above mentioned providers.

The new integration allowed us to process more links and to add a range of new features to the toolset that will benefit all our customers and increase the value of the plans that we offer.

2. Important Links and Rankings Upgrades

A lot of small things have been tweaked, while some really important additions have been done. Here they are:

  1. Daily Link Updates – We moved from Weekly to Daily updates and now we show New/Lost links on a daily basis. We also kept the complete weekly re-crawl for all your site’s backlinks, so that you get the most fresh and complete link data possible.

  2. Anchor Text History – We live by our motto, which is “Cutting-Edge SEO Tools”, and that is why we strive to innovate SEO technology with the aim to ease your SEO Professional life. This time we added the ability to historically track anchor text evolution. No other SEO tool allows you to do this. Here are a few things that evidentiate why this is a very important addition to your Professional SEO toolset:

    1. You keep a close eye on how your Commercial vs Brand anchor text evolves so that you can easily correlate this evolution to a potential unnatural link penalty or ranking increase/decrease.
    2. You can track the growth of your anchor text portfolio and understand where you need to make strategic moves to influence a particular anchor text trend.
    3. You monitor you competitors anchor text velocity and understand their link building strategies from a historical point of view.

  3. Link Velocity – with the new MajesticSEO partnership we have access to a plethora of new data. Link Velocity data is of great importance to anyone that is serious about SEO. You will be able to view the monthly link evolution, since the existence of a site.

  4. Link Quality Metric – we created a unique metric that is computed based on various aggregated metrics and features. We mix a wide range of metrics into a unique formula, and classify links in:

    1. High Authority – links that provide a high degree of quality and relevance to your site. (not that many usually)
    2. Good Authority – links that are really good for your site. It is great if you have a high distribution of these types of links.
    3. Average Authority – links that provide some quality, but nothing spectacular.
    4. Low Authority – links that don’t really provide value to your site or rankings.
    5. No Authority – links that have no particular importance in your linking campaign influence to your rankings of traffic.

A similar metric is applied to the referring domains also, so that you can easily classify authoritative referring domains.

  5. More Keywords Tracked – A lot of our customers asked for more keywords to be monitored in the rank tracking module, at the cost of less frequent tracking. We added the ability to switch your account from Weekly to Daily Rank Tracking (and vice versa).
    1. Daily will give you more insight, as we track the keywords on a daily basis.
    2. Weekly will allow you to track more keywords at a lower frequency.

You can choose whatever option suits your needs. Simple and flexible!

3. Simpler Credit System

Until now we used a rather complex site credit system that would allow you to run more in-depth analysis if you required, by selecting multiple site credits, or analyze more sites with fewer site credits. Based on the customer feedback, we concluded that the site credit system created a lot of confusion and frustration.

We have carefully analyzed the situation and decided to replace the site credit system with a much simpler and more natural way of counting analyzed sites.

This is how we improved it:

      • 1 site credit means 1 site now with a maximum number of links analyzed per site that is mentioned in the plan specs (PRO is 10k links per site for example and ELITE is 50k links per site).
      • No more confusion by using multiple site credits for a site analysis, as the concept has been removed.
      • Import is not limited by site credits anymore, but by the actual links analyzed for the site. Do as many imports as you want, with the condition to be under the maximum links per site quota.

Here are a few examples of what it was and what it is now:

Before – 1 site with 10k backlinks had an analysis cost of 4 sites credits (each credit was the equivalent of 2.500 links).

After – 1 site with 10k backlinks has an analysis cost of 1 site. (the sites’ maximum link allowance for the new PRO plan is 10.000 links)

Before – 1 site with 20k backlinks had an analysis cost of 8 sites credits (each credit was the equivalent of 2.500 links).

After – 1 site with 50k backlinks has an analysis cost of 1 site. (the sites’ maximum link allowance for the new ELITE plan is 50.000 links)

The analysis completeness was increased by 400% to 2.500% and the campaign creation process was also simplified.

We were able to keep the costs down, by increasing our dynamic cloud infrastructure that can now support even more on-demand crawling.

To put it simple you get more links analyzed, with an easier to use campaign wizard and simpler to understand system.

If you have bigger or more sites you can easily upgrade to the plans listed on the site, or ask for a custom plan (if it is the case). The plans are differentiated based on the volume of sites, links and keywords you need to analyze and track. All current plans have all the features included.

4. New Pricing

Based on the additional new features, tools and partnerships, we improved our subscription plans so that we provide a much better balance of Quality vs Cost to our customers.

You can find our new pricing structure here. Best fitted for maximum ROI!

Some of our previous plans were taken out from the current offer (the $19 and $49 plans), while the remaining plans have been altered to provide the best possible ROI.

To conclude, cognitiveSEO provides you with an average monthly cost of $3 to $5 per analyzed site,

which is the most affordable cost you will get anywhere. This includes the unique in-depth link analysis, rank tracking, social visibility analysis and link management, all done on-demand for your sites and competitors.

Usually this kind of report or analysis is billed to a client in the range of $XXX per month.

Your ROI is in the XXX% – X.XXX% range! Pretty neat wouldn’t you say?

If you are not a customer yet, you can easily try the system by using our Free 14-Day Trial.

All our current customer accounts are grandfathered, meaning that nothing will be changed in the pricing on the plans they already have, until the account is cancelled or the billing fails for whatever reasons.

I invite all our current customers to check the new offer and switch their plan if they consider the new plans provide a better value to their business. If you have any question drop us a line at support@cognitiveseo.com and we will get back ASAP.

Approximately six months ago we started the implementation of what is probably the most powerful, beautiful and easiest way to visualize a site’s link profile. The name of this new cutting-edge feature is:

Visual Link Explorer cover

Visual Link Explorer – Cutting-Edge Link Graphs Made Simple

This is the easiest, yet advanced, visualization that allows you to comprehend the ever-growing complexity of a site’s link profile.

No other SEO tool has implemented automatic extraction, creation, and navigation of Link Graphs. Until now only advanced technical SEOs could implement similar link graphs using complex tools such as Gephi or Fusion Tables. This did not only require advanced technical skills but it also required a lot of time to implement.

The New Visual Link Explorer creates link graphs on the fly (no technical skills required … and it saves a huge amount of time by having them automatically generated) based on the backlinks of the analyzed site. It also has “pure” SEO features that are dedicated to backlink analysis, such as:

  • Link Profiling – Live/Lost Links, NoFollow/Dofollow, Website Type, etc.
  • Comprehend Link Quality by using different Link Metrics.
  • Highlight Link Relations using the Search Function.
  • In-depth Zoom on each Link.
  • Navigate using Sliding and Zooming.
  • Save Link Graph Snapshots – WYSIWYG.
  • Optimized to work fast with tens of thousands of links.

This is a dream come true for any SEO professional that at least once in his/her carrier needed or wanted to have that cutting-edge, that would put his/her analysis/pitch or client report above the competitors.

What is this good at?

I would like to quickly highlight some of the most useful things that can easily be achieved with the new link explorer:

  • Visually Comprehend Backlink Profiles in a Heartbeat. (understand faster)
  • Eye candy & Airplane View of a Site’s Links (get the “cool” big picture)

Visually Comprehend Backlink Profiles

  • Pitch or Report to Clients with a unique twist. (always be unique)
  • Navigate inside a site’s link profile (intuitive visual backlink navigation)

Pitch or Report to Clients with a unique twist

  • Quicker Side-Panel Visualization with Instant Link Preview Onpage

Quick Side-Panel Visualization

  • Faster Competitive Analysis. (save huge amounts of time)
  • Quickly spot link prospects on competitor profiles. (find faster)

Quickly spot link prospects on competitor profiles

Give me more details. It’s too vague …

Having spotted some of the macro uses of this tool, I would like to go a bit more in-depth and give you actual examples of some of the Visual Link Explorer use cases.

This visualization combined with the rest of the strengths of the cognitiveSEO platform will allow you to do your SEO stuff much smarter and faster.

  • Instantly Spot, Low and High-Quality Links.

Instantly Spot Low and High Quality Links

  • Search for links by (url, anchor text etc) and highlight them among others.

Search for links by url anchor text

  • View Broken Links Distributions over the entire link profile of a site.

View Broken Links Distribution

  • Identify Themed Linked Pages Easily

Corporate related links

  • Identify the most linked pages of a site and how their backlinks look like.
  • Filter out Broken Links and Analyze only Live + In-Content Links. (hundreds of other filter combinations are available )

Filter and Analyze only Live & In Content Links

Other Notable stuff about the Visual Link Explorer

While the tool aggregates link data from a multitude of backlink providers (Ahrefs, Blekko, SEOkicks, majestic SEO & Moz) to ensure the completeness of your link profile data, you can also import links from Google Webmaster Tools to make the analysis even more complete.

This is only the initial step in the whole on-demand backlink analysis process. After we aggregate, de-duplicate and sort the data, we re-crawl those links allowing our platform to apply a unique range of algorithms to each and every backlink, extracting information such as the type of the linking site (blog/forum etc), link type (in-content, blogroll etc) and many others.

We even take image snapshots and identify the visual location of the link on the page with our unique visual crawler.(for each link we gather top quality metrics that allow you to view the link profile of a site from various POVs)

The Visual Link Explorer is fully available on any subscription from the Professional one and up, inclusively. You can start your free 14 day trial in a few seconds. View all subscriptions here.

Conclusion

Backlink Visualization has a multitude of use cases as shown above. The Visual Link Explorer as it is implemented on cognitiveSEO is not only a visualization but it is also a new way to navigate and discover a site’s link profile. I hope you will find this new feature as useful as we, and the people that tested it prior to its official lauch, did.

To finalize this post I would like to make a short note on what the new Visual Link Explorer is meant to be:

Cutting-Edge Navigational Backlink Visualization that Impresses Clients and Empowers SEO Professionals to Quickly get backlink intelligence that otherwise would take ages to comprehend.

 Thank you!

My big thanks go to our current customers for providing active feedback, to the cognitiveSEO team for developing such a great new feature and to the smart people in the SEO industry that have influenced this implementation, indirectly, by writing quality articles on the subject of backlink graph visualization and link graph networks.  This week we just moved up on the age scale. We just turned 1!

Back in December 2011, after a year and a half of continuous programming & development, we launched the
cognitiveSEO toolset.

Rewinding time, I can say that it was quite an exciting day. 2 hours before the expected launch time our ISP had a connection issue and we were cut off. You just can’t imagine the frenzy that got into us at the time. We had to
quickly find a few internet sticks to “plug in” and make everything work as planned.

Finally we did it and we successfully launched!

We generated a lot of buzz and people joined our new toolset to check it out.
I am glad to say that we still have active customers that joined cognitiveSEO that first day, 1 year back.
Now we are an SEO platform that has one of the best and most in-depth backlink analysis module, integrated with daily rank trackinglink management and an multi-user task management module.

Here are some of the principles that guide us in creating and updating the toolset:

  • Quality over Quantity
  • Transparency
  • NO Robotic Support – Just shoot us a mail to get to know us and the toolset better.
  • NO Pushy Sales – Just open minded guys that really want to give you a helping hand.
  • A Smart SEO Toolset for the Smart Webmaster, Agency and Enterprise Customer.
  • Continuously updated – In such a challenging field, as the Internet Marketing one, it is impossible to stay up-to-date and operate under a static software.

Talking about the last item in the list, we could not have happily celebrated the 1 year anniversary without adding some cool new features 🙂 to the toolset. Here they are:

1. 500% Processing Performance Increase

We have completely rewritten the entire backend processing system in order to speed up the on-demand crawling and analyzing of your sites. At this point we can scale the system up to almost an “unlimited” number of servers, based on the required processing volume. Any account on the system benefits from this performance increase. Enterprise customers, with very big sites, will be more than happy to have their campaigns ran much faster now.

Here is a quick video that explains what is actually going on under the hood of the cognitiveSEO system.

2. The New cognitiveSEO Link Rank™ (CLRank™)

The CLRank™ is a transparent,crowd-sourced  and customizable score that gives you a better overview on a sites’ link profile value. We created this score because we, and our customers, felt the need of a transparent score for a site’s link profile.

Now you can better compare you site and your competitors using this link metric.

The CLRank™ has as ingredients the number of referring domains, links, IPs, link velocity trends and other link related factors. By default it has different influences applied to each of these ingredients. This is a better & transparent metric than other individual metrics, because it  uses metrics from our data providers (Ahrefs, MajesticSEO & SEOmoz) as ingredients, crowd-sourcing then into the final score along with values such as the exact number of referring domains, unique anchor texts and others important factors that could influence a sites’ ranking from a link profile point of view.

Each ingredients’ influence can be altered by you, if you consider that in certain cases the default influences may not be what you need them to be.

The CLRank™ altering option is available for the Premium & Elite subscriptions, as this is mainly to be used by Power Users.

3. Real-time Campaign Processing Preloader

Rewriting the entire backend system empowered us to add this preloader, allowing you to see how fast your campaign is processed and stay up to date with the status of the crawling and analyzing on your campaign. The preloader will also give you insight into what is going on in the backend … things such as fetching links, analyzing pages, extracting metrics and other messages will be displayed during the process.

To conclude this post, the entire cognitiveSEO team would like to thank you for an excellent year. (check more photos from our 1 year anniversary party on our Facebook page)

Looking forward for an even better 2013.

Happy SEO Analysis to you all!

Finally I got to the point where I can write this. We have been continuously working for the last 5 months on this upgrade. To put it simply, this is the biggest upgrade to cognitiveSEO yet, and it improves the way you analyze backlinks by adding even more link data points into a new & simplified user interface.

In the age of raw link data and hundreds of SEO metrics, we are improving the backlink analyzer concepts used in our  tool by providing:

  1. Fresh & Complete Link Data [Aggregated & De-duped] from Ahrefs, MajesticSEO, SEOmoz, Blekko & SEOKicks.
  2. Re-crawled & Classified On-Demand for You.
  3. In an “easy to digest” UI.

I want to personally thank, all of our customers, who have provided the precious feedback that allowed us to revamp the inBound Link Analysis to a simpler & better link analysis concept, integrated with the most important features that any link builder needs.

The whole concept of the inBound Link Analyzer module is about simplifying the complexity of the link ecosystem. SEO and Link Building are getting more complex than ever, and having complex tools, will not help you, the user, in making more well informed decisions about your SEO day to day activity. Going through tens of thousands of raw links gives you almost nothing, that you can actually use in your backlink strategy plan.

Total link counts, nowadays only tell you 1% of the  ranking story of a site. That is why, you should focus on backlink segmentation and classification that will allow you to understand the  link profile of the analyzed site.

A few of our customers had early access to this upgrade, and they were enchanted by it (thank you all for the great feedback you provided). Here are some of their opinions on the old vs the new backlink analyzer:

Let’s move on to the actual upgrades that the tool got. Here is a list with all the new or redesigned functionalities of the cognitive SEO tool.

The New & Improved Backlink Analysis Features

Based on the concept “A picture is worth a thousand words”, here are, all of the above, 18 features exemplified with screen photos and short descriptions.

First, I would like to thank you for trusting us in your SEO analysis adventures and would love to have you test the tools. You can get your free 14 day trial here!

One page dashboard to Rule all your links.

We merged over 20 pages in one single dash with 36 charts and one big table with all your links. You won’t have to browse through tens of pages anymore, loosing time and wondering how to correlate the various link data. You can print the charts and also export link data from each individual table. The “big” page even loads quite quickly!

Import even more links from Google Webmaster Tools, Bing Link Explorer and others.

We added import functionality for Google Webmaster Tools data ( Bing Link Explorer and other link data providers ) so that you can compliment the data that we extract from all the backlink providers that we use, with the data that you love most. You can even import custom lists of links with the click of a button.

Link Alerts for both your site and your competitors.

You will receive weekly mails with the new links that appeared in that timeframe. This works both on your site and your competitors and it builds out a link velocity graph inside the app. This is a great link intelligence advantage, being able to see how your competitors link profiles are evolving compared to yours, and at the same time, to have access to the exact links that create the evolution of thee backlink profiles.

Anchor Text Cloud & Common Anchor Texts

Finding common anchor texts between your site and the competitors and visualizing anchor data has never been easier. You can easily use this data to understand the strengths & weaknesses of your link building plan, in terms of anchor text distribution. Spotting over-optimized anchor text is like a breeze now!

New Link Velocity data points.

On each campaign re-crawl, we save different data points that allow you to see the evolution of your backlink profile. For example you can view the evolution of a link profile from the site type, point of view or from nofollow/dofollow links. Many more are data points are saved.

Top Linked Pages

View the most linked pages of the sites that you analyze. You are also able to visualize how the referring domains vs links are acquired for each individual page of the analyzed site.

Better Competitive Link Analysis

One single page where you can compare over 20 charts and correlate the most important seo metrics to tell you what makes the difference between your site and your competitors sites. It has never been easier to compare such huge amounts of link data in an easy to digest & fast interface.

Side-by-side Competitor Comparison

In the Competitive Link Analysis area you will find the Winner vs Loser comparison, based on different link metrics. You can even apply different filters and the comparison will change dynamically. So many possibilities here! Link building and analysis is all about creativity and what you are looking to accomplish.

Analyze 1 link per referring domain

In certain situations you might only want to check the most important link from each referring domain individually. Keeps your analysis even more focused!

Common Links, Common Referring Domains & Common IPs

Easily compare and identify unnatural linking patterns using the common referring domains and common IPs. You can easily spot link networks from this chart alone!

Full Domain & Sub-domain Analysis

Until now, you where only able to run subdomain analysis on the campaigns that you created inside cognitiveSEO. From now on your possibilities are endless because you can run both full domain analysis and subdomain analysis. If you want you can even run the analysis on a custom list of URLs.

Recurring & One-time Snapshot Campaigns

Adding campaings in cognitiveSEO is  cleaner now. We splitted the campaign concept in two: One-time Snapshots & Recurring Campaigns. The big difference is that “Recurring Campaigns” will be automatically re-crawled weekly and also allow continuous rank tracking. “One-time Snapshots” are best for one-time site benchmarking & analysis and client pitches.

in-Content Links Distribution Chart

We were detecting in-Content links since the initial launch of cognitiveSEO in December 2011, but until now we missed to add this chart. We believe this is a great addition to our range of charts as this tells part of the story on how links were built to the analyzed site.

Link History Dimension

The Link History dimension was added. Now you can filter the links, based on a selected timeframe. You will be able to analyze only the links that appeared in the last 2 weeks for example. Great for detailed link velocity analysis!

The New Trust & Citation metrics from MajesticSEO

MajesticSEO introduced a few months ago their New Trust & Citation metrics. We have integrated them in cognitiveSEO, in these beautiful charts that tell you what each point means and what it actually represents.

Highly scalable system for Enterprise users

We did not work on this revamp, for 5 months, without taking in consideration our Enterprise users. Our system is scalable with dedicated servers and custom enterprise plans (contact us at support@cognitiveseo.com), to allow you to analyze millions of links on demand, with the detail and granularity that no other backlink analysis tool gives you.

Dynamic Full Page Link filters

The whole page, with all the charts, can be filtered dynamically, and you will get the entire page re-drawn with the new filtered data. For example if you only want to view the link profile of the backlinks that point to your URLs that contain the word “blog” and have a rating of 3 to 5, after you apply these filters your page will be refreshed and you will see only the filtered data & charts.

Extended / Condensed View for better visualizations

The link analysis dashboard is a really long page (“Extended View”). If this design does not fit you, we have the tabbed view, which we named the “Condensed View”. Either way, these are great link visualizations that will help you understand backlink profiles and allow you to make decisions faster.

The two biggest challenges of this upgrade were:

  • Simplify Complexity
  • Scale the system for Enterprise users.

I want to thank the entire team here for the continuos work that they have put into this new upgrade.

It was a real challenge and we hope that you will LOVE IT.  Get your free 14 day trial here!
